wienwood 25: Winning projects show timber construction in all its diversity
Wood as an answer to the climate emergency – sounds like a bold headline, but it is reality in Vienna. The wienwood 25 – Vienna Wood Construction Prize honors outstanding buildings that impress with their innovative use of wood. On Thursday evening there were... Architecture Center Vienna four projects received awards, an additional special prize was awarded and three projects received recognition.
"The award-winning projects prove how innovative and diverse timber construction can be today - and, above all, how important it is for climate protection. We are pleased to continue on this path together as a partner and to raise awareness of sustainable construction methods."Gerald Weber, CEO of Wiener Städtische Versicherung
Variety of award-winning projects
According to the organizers, wienwood 25 both large-scale residential buildings as well as allotment houses, educational and sports buildings were assessed. The award winners - including "Woody - M", the Großfeldsiedlung training swimming pool, the Rudolf Steiner School Vienna Wall and the Villa Minimale - represent the growing trend: wood is used in an urban, modular and ecological way.
Role model functions and technological potential
“Woody – M” demonstrates how cross-laminated timber construction makes large residential buildings possible: 85 rental apartments above an underground car park and supermarket show that densification with wood can be efficient and attractive. The swimming pool in the Großfeldsiedlung relies on a wooden structure and roof construction made of glued laminated timber and cross-laminated timber - a prototype that is also used in Simmering. In the school extension in Vienna Wall, wood and clay combine to create a natural material effect. And the Villa Minimale proves that even in just 35 square meters, space can be designed to be surprisingly spacious.
"Like all other building materials, the use of wood has its material-specific limitations, but wood is the building material that represents a paradigm shift in times of climate change. This is also reflected in the award-winning buildings, which represent a new way of building and thinking and make an important contribution to the innovative further development of wood construction in the city."jury
Special prize and recognition – public added value in view
A special prize went to SchloR – Schöner Leben, a collective business and residential community project. Recognitions were awarded to the general psychiatric department of the Ottakring Clinic, the Sport & Fun Hall Leopoldstadt and Haus P in a garden settlement. These projects show that social, health and leisure functions also benefit from sustainable timber construction - not just aesthetically, but functionally and ecologically.
“The award-winning buildings show that the use of wood is becoming more and more commonplace in an urban context, not only as a facade material, but above all as a structural building material.”jury
Final thoughts on wienwood 25
This year's winners of wienwood 25 clearly show that wooden construction is no longer a marginal phenomenon, but is becoming a central part of urban development. Whether large or small, social or private – these examples provide inspiration for Vienna and beyond: wood can shape spaces, create atmosphere and at the same time minimize environmental impacts.
