The comfortably insulated winter garden as a living space that can be used all year round for living and working? Or simply a patio cover for an airy summer garden? There are hardly any limits to the design.

Noble room with lots of views

Experience and enjoy all the seasons as close to nature as possible – from home? This is possible with a winter or summer garden. One is characterized as warm, the other as cold. Both with lots of natural light, fresh air in summer and cozy warmth “in the middle of” nature on cold days. When deciding on a summer or winter garden, you should know exactly how you want to use it before building it. Retrofitting existing systems is possible, but very difficult and therefore quite expensive.

Airy cool or comfortably warm?

A winter garden is the thermally insulated variant. Well heated, it can be used all year round as an additional living room, dining room or study as well as a leisure room. In contrast, the “cold” summer garden is simply a terrace roof with glass walls on the sides, usually simply glazed without insulation and thermally insulated profiles. This is enough for the warm days and also partly as protection against rain and wind.

Lightweight, delicate construction

For both variants, the aluminum profiles available on the market are light and stable. Aluminum remains easy to care for for years, is shock and scratch resistant and has a timelessly modern and elegant appearance. The selection of providers here is quite large. For a warm winter garden, aluminum profiles with thermal separation are used. The summer garden is constructed more simply. For example, with sliding glass doors without frames.

Which roof fits?

When it comes to the roof of the winter garden, you have a large selection of different shapes. The common and well-known variants are the pent roof, the hipped roof and the gable roof. In general, the more elaborate a roof is planned and the more small glass areas are used, the more expensive the winter garden becomes. A flat roof can impress with its cubist design. If you want a glass area for the typical winter garden feeling, then glass domes that can be integrated into the flat roof are ideal. Important: If you prefer a flat roof, you have to make sure that the rain can drain off properly. And pay attention to stability, because high snow loads are to be expected in the cold seasons.

Many functions in the glass

A winter garden consists of a lot of glass, usually with thermally insulated triple glazing, so that the extended living space can be used at any time of the year. The large glass surfaces provide wonderful views of nature and are essential for a good climate in the winter garden. The interior should heat up pleasantly on cold days thanks to the sunshine. On hot days the opposite applies; the heat should stay outside, which can be achieved with special glazing with sun and heat protection. The glazing can also contain other functions, such as soundproofing and security. New multifunctional glasses with integrated solar modules even generate electricity.

Shade, ventilate and heat

When the sun shines down strongly, the glass cultivations warm up properly. Quite pleasant on cold days, but in summer the winter garden can overheat. This requires shading or a ventilation system. These days, these are often controlled automatically in order to be able to react immediately to changing weather and fluctuating temperatures. Awnings are most often used for external shading on the glass roof and vertical surfaces. These effectively stop the sun from shining directly onto the glazing. Heating is recommended for cold days because there is not enough energy to provide a comfortable living environment.

Push, lift or fold

When heading out into the great outdoors, the winter or summer garden is equipped with a variety of window and door systems for sliding, lifting or folding, which can be opened easily with little effort. The systems are partly made of recycled aluminum, are maintenance-free and durable. The smooth running, longevity and comfortable operation of the components are thanks to the fittings technology with soft-close technology and robust stainless steel running rails. Equipped with an electric drive, the window and door systems can be conveniently controlled at the touch of a button and connected to the smart home system. Lifting and sliding doors can be easily moved with a smooth-running lever mechanism, even with particularly large elements.

A winter garden significantly increases the value of a property.

Winter garden as an investment

Especially in these currently volatile times, a solid and secure capital investment can be very useful as a precaution for old age. A winter garden that has been professionally planned and built by a specialist company has been proven to increase the value of a property. Of course, certain requirements must be met, such as the use of high-quality materials. (gw)
