Air conditioning units as heating

The use of air conditioning units is changing: they are increasingly being used in heating mode - sometimes even as main heating. This results in current usage data from Panasonic Heating & Cooling Solutions. A current evaluation from 2024, which examined usage behavior in ten European countries, shows “that 81 percent of installed air conditioning units are used either exclusively for heating or for both heating and cooling.” This development shows the growing importance of energy-efficient solutions for living comfort that can be used all year round.

72.4 percent of the time in heating mode

Panasonic's analysis is based on the actual hours of use of the devices in the period from January to December 2024 and shows that on average in Europe, the devices run in heating mode 72.4 percent of the time - "a clear sign of the change in usage," according to the manufacturer.

According to Panasonic, this trend is particularly pronounced in Scandinavian countries: in Norway the heating share is 95.6 percent and in Denmark it is 94.7 percent. Even in countries with milder climates such as Italy (43.8 percent) and Spain (42.5 percent), the heating function is heavily used.

This development makes one thing clear above all: “Choosing an air conditioning unit today is also a decision for a heating system.” Panasonic is responding to this demand. With air conditioning units specially developed for cold climates, such as the new Power Heat Multi multi-split outdoor unit, the company says it offers “reliable heating performance even under extreme conditions”. In the 2-room model, the system delivers up to 3.9 kilowatts of heating power at outside temperatures of minus 25 degrees Celsius. Thanks to modern inverter technology, a SCOP of 4.6 and the energy efficiency class A++, the Power Heat Multi system is ideal for single and multi-room solutions. Such a solution also offers many other advantages: easy installation, high energy efficiency, integrated WLAN and Nanoe X air purification.
