Biomass Association calls for clear framework conditions

At the heating plant operators' day in Ossiach, the Austrian Biomass Association (ÖBMV) emphasized the role of bioenergy in the future energy system and called for comprehensive legal measures to phase out fossil fuels. Around 500,000 oil heaters and 900,000 gas heaters are still in operation in Austria. President Franz Titschenbacher spoke out, among other things, in favor of clear exit plans, the further development of boiler replacement funding, an adjustment of green electricity tariffs and a reduction in bureaucracy in certification.

In its review, the association highlighted the achievements of the last few years: 250 petajoules of bioenergy, sales of 5.4 billion euros, 30,000 jobs and around 13 million tons of CO₂ saved. Around half of households heat directly or indirectly with wood. Despite temporary slumps in boiler sales, a new record was set in 2024.

Another topic was the first implementation of theInternational Heating Plant Operators Day, with which the industry wants to network across borders in the future. The aim is a more intensive exchange on the legal framework and experiences in dealing with bioenergy.

On its 30th anniversary, the ÖBMV looked back on its development since it was founded in 1995. Numerous events, publications and campaigns have contributed to the establishment of bioenergy in Austria.
