Italian elegance

"The idea for my masterpiece didn't come about overnight - it was the result of a long and intensive design process. I wanted to combine classic elements of carpentry with a modern design," says Markus Lukas, who works at Schnegg carpentry in Imsterberg, describing the challenge of creating a harmonious connection between "both worlds". This is also indicated by the resonant Italian name “Appesso d’Eleganza” (in German “hanging elegance”).

Decisive impulses for his wall-hung wardrobe, which will be on display in the master carpenter gallery of the Holz- und Lignorama tool museum is exhibited, the graduate of the master school at Wifi Tirol learned from conscious observations in everyday life - especially when visiting restaurants, shops and hotels: "A key moment was the sight of a historical shop window in a vaulted arch in the middle of an old town. This architectural form fascinated me so much that I adopted the round arch as the design center in my masterpiece." The advice to focus on the stylish and safe storage of valuable, rarely used items also came from the private environment - and has a decisive influence on the function of the masterpiece.

 Thoughtful choice of materials

The technically sophisticated arched body posed just as much of a challenge as the glass frame door inserted into the floor. The components are made in segment construction from three-layer glued wood, connected with one-sided miter and mortise-and-tenon connections. Lukas chose dark brown American walnut as the main material for the body, in contrast to which the storage body is made of elm. With its natural grain and matt lacquered anti-scratch G05 surface, this forms a robust but natural storage surface.

“The handleless drawers with a hidden opening mechanism underline the contemporary character of the piece and often create a surprise effect at first contact thanks to the sophisticated operation,” says the master carpenter, describing some of the special features of his furniture – which also includes the back wall made of “Spiegelmax”. This high-pressure aluminum composite material in a gray matt finish “gives the piece of furniture depth and elegance, enhanced by indirect LED lighting that gently highlights the interior.”(gh/lukas)
